For the first time, Zachery C. Longboy’s groundbreaking practice expanded into the digital interactive and immersive realm with Shemanshe. Drawing on 34 years of pioneering work featured at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the National Gallery of Canada, and galleries across the country, this XR experience continued Longboy’s fearless exploration of identity, belonging, and resilience. Born in Churchill, Manitoba of Sayisi Dene lineage, Longboy’s multi-disciplinary works weave together video, performance, and installation, placing his lived experience as a white-adopted, Indigenous, Two-Spirited, HIV+ man at the center of powerful, hybrid storytelling. Shemanshe invited audiences into a visceral encounter with land, memory, and spirit, marking a new chapter in a career that has consistently challenged and expanded the boundaries of contemporary art.
