AR Artwork Statement:
The Immersive Knowledge Transfer Podcast is a creation of the IM4 Media Lab with the aim to amplify the voices of Indigenous creatives working with immersive technologies. Through long-form interviews, community highlights and musical guests, the series shares the experiences, insights and stories of Indigenous digital leaders and artists from around the world.


Artist Bio:
Ocean Hyland is an aspiring artist in the fields of painting, jewellery, carving, weaving and language. Currently she lives at the village Xwkw’laxwum (Qualicum Bay, Vancouver Island). Ocean is of mixed ancestry from Cheam, Tsleil Waututh, Squamish, and Polynesian on her mother’s side. Her father is Irish and Scottish. Passed down from her maternal grandfather she carries the ancestral name Ts'simtelot, She shares this name with her mother Charlene Aleck.

She has studied at both the Native Education College and at Simon Fraser University taking hands on programs like the North-West coast jewellery arts program (Jan 2017-Aug 2017) learning about art history and contemporary silver jewellery techniques, and then in Simon Fraser University’s Language Immersion program (Sept 2017-April 2018- diploma) becoming proficient in the Skwxwu7mesh language.

Ocean has also apprenticed under various Indigenous artists such as Zachary George (Tsleil Waututh Nation) and Aaron Nelson Moody (Squamish Nation). Ocean is passionate about her art, this is highlighted through her dedication to continuously educate herself on Coast Salish art.
